Chapter Thirteen: Ana

I totally understood where Ka-Riu was coming from. He told me what this meant to him. He wanted to prove that he could do something without screwing up. I meant what I told him. In my eyes, this was not a screw up. This was doing the smart thing.

Han had no idea that his other cousins were here. He might try and guess what Ka would do, but he had no idea to try and predict how Fuku, Ri, or Kin would react.

Ka stood in the corner with his arms folded against his chest not pouting, while he looked a lot like he was pouting. Fuku sat on the couch eating the nachos that he made us stop for. Kin sat on the back of the couch, grabbing chips over her big brother’s shoulder. He looked annoyed, but didn’t say anything. Ri-Riu was staring out the window. He didn’t blink or move a muscle. Not even a twitch.

I observed them, taking everything about the group in. They moved the same—deliberate and precise. More than that, they shared the same mannerisms. As easy they were trying to play it, every single one of them had their jaws clenched and tapped fingers in the same rhythm that only they could hear. I had a suspicion it was the beat of one of their heartbeats. Hell, maybe all of theirs.

Fuku passed the fourth serving over his shoulder to Kin. “I’m done. You can have the rest.”

“So very generous,” Kin cooed.

My phone chirped in Ka-Riu’s pocket. He dug it out and read it aloud; “’Still weighing all my options. Doesn’t hurt I have the company of a pretty woman. She’s growing on me.’”

The phone chirped again and Ka kept reading; “’I think she likes me.’”

I wanted to scream my frustration. “We can’t wait for him. Where would he be?”

Ri still didn’t move as he spoke. “I can find him.”

“Do it,” I quickly agreed.

“Wait, wait,” Kin protested. “Brute force might not be the best way to play this.”

“I really don’t want Paola alone with this guy a second longer than she has to be,” I said.

“We have to play this smart.” Ka-Riu agreed with Kin. “I know you are worried, but like you warned me, don’t allow your emotions to play into his hands.”

Damn it. I hated when people are right and I’m not.

“Fine. Then what?” I asked, my frustration evident in the way I flung my arms as punctuation to my words.

Fuku stood up and paced once more. He retrieved the stone he fell in love with at the shop. It flipped between his fingers. His eyes once more far off as he moved across the room.

“We have to play this maybe a little of both and I know how.” Fuku continued to make the stone dance in his hand. “Ri will go find where he is hiding. Kin go with Ana and Ka to see if you can find something that resembles the Clan Stones. Come back here in half an hour.
